Living with a pacemaker

26 October, 2025

  1. A pacemaker is a device that is used to treat slow heart beats.
  2. It send small painless electrical impulses to your heart to restore the normal rate
  3. The pacemaker can provide an appropriate heart rate for all everyday activities through the use of sensors.
  4. The pacemaker is put under the skin by a small incision using local anesthesia usually below the collarbone.
  5. The pacemaker gets connected to the heart through wires (either one or two) that gets threaded along a big vein that lies beneath the collarbone.
  6. Most patients with implanted pacemakers are able to work and enjoy hobbies, travel and their sexual life. Your doctor will discuss any restrictions with you.
  7. Under normal use, it is safe for someone with a pacemaker to use most household items including microwave ovens, hair dryers, electric razors, vacuums, TV, radios, MP3 players, computers.
  8. Ask your doctor if you can get an NRI scan done or not, all other medical scans are allowed without restriction.
  9. Your doctor will need to check your pacemaker on regular basis with a device called a “programmer” to make sure that it is functioning properly.
